MUSIC OF HOPE
SAINT JAMES PLACE, GREAT BARRINGTON, MA
VIRTUAL CONCERT
ASHLEY BATHGATE
Cello
Music of Hope was conceived and recorded in March of 2020 at Saint James Place in Great Barrington, MA, featuring music by Schumann, De Falla, Messiaen, Arvo Pärt, Caroline Shaw and Chopin.
The world had just begun to understand and grapple with the effects of a global pandemic as concerts and events were canceled, theaters and public venues were closed and most people were adjusting to the new normal to stay at home.
The recording took place in the presence of two kind friends who felt comfortable and safe to sit in a large, enclosed space and serve willingly as our audience. After a long and uncertain 18 months, the possibility of performing beyond the borders of our home spaces was, while overwhelming at first, also deeply gratifying, because of a renewed sense of hope that the Arts would continue to inspire, nourish and connect us.
I would like to thank and am deeply indebted to Ashley Bathgate for her artistry and friendship, to Fred Harris and Seth Keys of Saint James Place for their hospitality, Terry Flynn for his magic touch in preparing the piano, Antony Gravett for his artistic design, Sam Torres, our sound man and videographer, our photographers Wendy Noyes and Tasja Keetman, and Nicole Furnée and Thomas Chulak for their generous support and friendship.
